Short Answer

1. Describe the relationship between Molly, Magwitch, Estella, Havisham, and Jaggers.

Estella is Molly and Magwitch’s child, whom Miss Havisham later adopted. Jaggers is the one who arranged the adoption for Mrs. Havisham, because he represented Molly in a case. Jaggers take Molly in as his servant to “break her”.

2. Which ending do you feel is more suitable to the book?

I think the book’s second ending is better for the book because it provides a sense of hope for the reader. Throughout the entire book all these events occur, but in the end everything works out for the best and if there were only the original ending, it would leave the reader just sitting there. It finally gives Pip a conclusion to the Estella chapters of his life he can be satisfied with.

3. Does Wemmick bring his work home with him?

Wemmick’s life inside and outside of the office is completely different. In the office, he is just as stern and strict is Jaggers is, but his home shows a completely different side to him At his home he has a ton of knick-knacks and he even looks after his aged parent.

4. Why does Pip get jealous when Estella visits Satis House without him?

It had turned into a habit for Pip for when Estella wanted to visit Satis House, that he would accompany her along. And so I think, when Estella didn’t ask him to take her to see Miss Havisham, that it put a huge dent in his ego. These visit also were just a time that he could see and be around Estella and he felt privileged because Estella was choosing him to take her to Satis House.

5. Are Joe and Biddy compatible?

Joe and Biddy are very compatible because they are both simple, honest, down to earth people who value the people in their lives that they care about. This is good for each other then because they can give to each other, what one another needs.

6. Explain Joe’s relationship with Pip.

Joe honestly understands a lot of what Pip is going through and he realizes he just needs to let Pip go through this. He lets Pip become who Pip truly is through is own means, and not by how Joe thinks Pip should live. He doesn’t force his opinions onto others.

--Describe the following characters in 5 or less sentences.

7. Pip

Pip is a very observant type of person. He has very honest feelings and he almost always loyal to those he cares about. He is a little misguided sometimes, but that’s what growing up is all about.

8. Joe

Joe is such a good-natured guy. He is easily ashamed when he doesn’t feel he is good enough for Pip. Joe is the strong silent type.

9. Biddy

Biddy has a great amount of insight into how people act and how people just are. She, like Joe, is also very good-natured and has a great maternal instinct.

10. Estella

I always saw the light in Estella shining through when she talked to Pip. As cold and cruel hearted as she was, I don’t ever believe anyone can be inherently evil and what evils they do have can be dealt with.

11. Miss Havisham

Havisham is an old, decrepit, spinster of an old lady who can’t allow the people around her to be happy, because she let someone steal her happiness away from her. She gets her vengeance on Compeyson through Estella and Estella’s relationships with men.

12. Jaggers

Jaggers is a very competitive person who judges people based on their appearance, with out getting to know them first. He values competency and skill.

13. Does Miss Havisham ever let go of her past?

I don’t think she’ll ever let go of what happened to her, but I do think the day she and Pip got caught in the fire had a very big impact on her. It opened her eyes to the truth and she was honestly regretful for the things she had done.

14. Who is able to change Estella (in the second ending)?

Estella marries Drummle and he is verbally, mentally, and physically abusive to her. She realizes the way she was treating people was wrong and I honestly think she felt regret for it.

15. Discuss the idea of unions throughout the book.

The first major example of unions throughout the book is the three marriages that take place: Joe and Biddy, Herbert and Clara, and Wemmick and his significant other. The idea of unions is also seen in the book in the seconding ending when Pip and Estella and reunited for the first time in years at Satis house and talk about what’s happened.

16. Why did Herbert give Pip the nickname of “Handel”?

Herbert gave Pip the nickname “Handel” because there is a song called “The Harmonious Blacksmith” and in the song the blacksmith’s name is Handel. This reminds him of Pip because of his apprenticeship with Joe being a blacksmith.

17. Discuss the positives and negatives of Pip’s great expectations?

The central negative aspect of Pip’s great expectations was the fact that while he is becoming this gentleman, he not doing anything productive. He’s not contributing to anything, not doing anything productive with the time is has or the people with whom he interacts. Pip’s great expectations ultimately bring him back down to earth about the whole Estella situation. What he goes through during his quest to become great teaches him more than he could of learned through anyone else, especially since he has to make his own mistakes and deal with the consequences.

18. Discuss one example of a role reversal in the book.

One example of a role reversal in the book would be the relationship between Pip and Miss Havisham. Throughout the larger portion of the book Miss Havisham had this ability to reduce Pip back into the common boy complete with thick boots. The last time Pip visits Miss Havisham she catches on fire giving us a whole other view on her. She now is the one on her knees begging to Pip and she is the one who presents weakness. She is the one who kisses his hand, not he the one who kisses hers.

19. Where does Herbert’s Clara live?

Clara lives with her father. She has to live with her father because he is sick and isn’t expected to be living much longer.

20. Why do you think Jaggers likes Drummle?

Jaggers is mainly attracted to Drummle because Drummle get what he wants when he wants it, which is very much like the personality of Jagger’s himself. Both have a darker side to them, which you can’t quite place, but you can feel is there. There’s a shadow hanging partially over them, and you don’t know what it’s hiding.

21. Explain a significant scene between Pip and Drummle at Satis house.

Pip and Drummle are both standing in front of the fireplace in order to get warmer when they have this silent battle, while talking. They are both standing near the firing and kept edging each other further and further away from one another with their shoulders while talking about how long they’ve been at Satis house and how long they plan to stay.

22. When Pip gets sick, who is there beside him to watch over him? And how does this person's attitude towards Pip change as Pip begins to get well again?

When Pip gets sick, Joe is there right beside his bed to comfort him and to make sure he is all right. He doesn’t hold any grudges against Pip but as Pip begins to get well again, Joe starts to think of Pip as the “gentlemanly” Pip and not Pip from the forge and begins to call him Sir again.

23. What is the truth about the events that happened to Mrs. Joe that caused to be in the state she was before she passed away?

Everyone thought it was the convict who knocked her out, but Orlick reveals the truth to Pip in the marshes. It was Orlick who knocked her out, because he feels Pip has always been out to get him and prevent him from succeeding.

24. How did Magwitch die?

Magwitch died because he was ill. He got found guilty of coming back to England and although the fact that he lived a crime free life in South Wales, it didn’t change the fact that he was not supposed to come back. He never was executed or anything similar to that, but died from natural causes.

25. Do you think Pip was ever truly in love with Estella?

I have no doubt in my mind that Pip loves Estella, but I don’t honestly think he was ever in love with her. Pip got caught up in the fact that he couldn’t have Estella because of so many conditions and even when those changed it still wouldn’t change the fact that Pip and Estella were not “meant to be together”. It’s easy to want something you can’t have, and I honestly don’t think Pip would have been happy if Estella and he were ever together.

I took a poll and a vote and it's unanimous and non-veto-able, YOU ALL SUCK AND YOU WANNA KNOW WHY!?

It's my sour sixteenth birthday. I don't wish it to be sweet, so hah, now it's sour.

I failed the test. Sorry JP for laughing at you, you get what goes around. I missed a whole bunch of little things, stupid things, well I missed a lot I got a 68, you gotta get a 70.

Stuff me the wonderful Brooke fucked up --

+ Forgot my blinkers after I parked and then was pulling out.
+ Didn't back up quite straight enough, I'd never done it before then.
+ Didn't know where the high beams where.
+ Didn't know where the FRONT defrost was, I only that there was a rear.
+ After I parked on the hill and turned my wheels and all the stuff and put on the emergency brake, he's like okay you can enter back into traffic now, so I go to pull the emergency brake release, and I pull the hood release instead. "Uhm, I just popped the hood..." "we're almost done, it should be okay until then".
+ I was at a red light, and at a red light you can turn right as long as you yield to the traffic that has the right of way. I came to the light, and to a complete stop, I looked and saw there was a car, but about 1/4 of a mile away, so I go. well when he told me what I did wrong, apparently he couldn't see if there were any cars coming, and so since he couldn't see, I missed points. Fuck that man.

Ironically, I did the parallel parking perfectly. Now I have to go back in a week, next monday, and take it again. I'll pass then, just because I've already done it once and know what to expect.
